ETFs hold a basket of investments in a single ticker, giving diversified exposure that trades like a stock. Compare this fund on its holdings, index, and expense ratio against similar funds before investing.
GLD is the largest gold-backed ETF in the world. Each share represents approximately 1/10th of a troy ounce of physical gold held in vaults in London and Zurich. GLD was one of the first major commodity ETFs and transformed how individual investors access gold exposure.
Gold itself is essentially a currency and a store of value. It pays no income and doesn't grow. But it has held purchasing power over centuries and tends to perform well when real interest rates are low or negative, when inflation is elevated, or when confidence in fiat currency falls.
GLD charges an expense ratio for storing and insuring the gold. That cost is small annually but compounds over very long holding periods. Some investors prefer lower-cost alternatives like IAU for long-term gold exposure.
