IBIT is BlackRock's spot Bitcoin ETF, launched in January 2024 following the SEC's first-ever approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs. It became one of the fastest-growing ETFs in history, accumulating over $50 billion in assets within its first year.
IBIT holds actual Bitcoin in cold storage through Coinbase as custodian. It allows investors to gain Bitcoin exposure through a standard brokerage account without managing wallets, private keys, or crypto exchanges directly.
The launch of spot Bitcoin ETFs was significant because it brought Bitcoin into the mainstream institutional investment framework. Pension funds, wealth managers, and financial advisors who couldn't hold crypto directly can now access it through IBIT.
