SPY is the original S&P 500 ETF and the most heavily traded fund in the world by dollar volume. Launched in 1993 by State Street Global Advisors, it tracks the S&P 500 index, which represents about 80% of total US equity market capitalization.
The S&P 500 itself is actively curated. A committee selects companies based on size, liquidity, financial viability, and trading requirements. Companies get added when they grow large enough and removed when they shrink or go private. The index evolves continuously, reflecting the changing US economy.
SPY charges a small expense ratio and distributes dividends quarterly. Its massive size and trading volume make it one of the most liquid instruments in existence, used by individual investors and institutions hedging billion-dollar portfolios alike.
