VNQ is Vanguard's real estate ETF and the largest fund of its kind, holding roughly 150 US real estate investment trusts and real estate companies in a single ticker. It tracks the MSCI US Investable Market Real Estate 25/50 index, which spans the sector's main property types: industrial warehouses, cell towers, data centers, apartments, retail centers, healthcare facilities, and self-storage.
The fund is the simplest mainstream way to own the REIT asset class rather than any single landlord. Its largest holdings have recently included names like Prologis, American Tower, Equinix, and Welltower, alongside dozens of mid-sized REITs, so no single company's tenants or management decide the outcome.
Because REITs must pay out most of their taxable income, VNQ passes through comparatively large quarterly distributions, and in the US most of that income is taxed as ordinary income rather than at qualified-dividend rates. Vanguard's structure keeps the expense ratio low by sector-fund standards.
