Meta owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, three of the most-used social platforms in the western world. Revenue is almost entirely advertising. The business nearly collapsed in 2022 when Apple's iOS privacy changes disrupted Meta's ad targeting. The recovery since then has been remarkable.
Meta's AI investments are real. The Llama model family is open-source and widely used by developers, and Meta's AI recommendations engine has significantly improved engagement and ad performance. The company also runs one of the largest GPU clusters in the world.
The metaverse bet, through Reality Labs, has cost over $60 billion and generated relatively little revenue. Zuckerberg has shown no sign of retreating from it. Investors either believe in the long-term thesis or they don't.

Meta runs Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Threads, and almost all of its profit comes from advertising to billions of daily users. The long-term question is whether its heavy spending on artificial intelligence keeps strengthening that advertising engine while the separate, money-losing Reality Labs bet either pays off or stays a drag.

Paid a per-share dividend in each of the 2 fiscal years shown (FY2024-FY2025). The dividend is recent within this window. In FY2025, dividends paid totaled about $5.3B.
The total debt balance rose over the window: about $1.5B in FY2012 vs about $58.7B in FY2025. This describes the balance's direction, not repayments.

Billions of people use its apps every day, and the pull of friends, family, and creators already being there makes those apps hard for a rival to displace.
A very large and still-growing user base gives Meta a durable place to show ads.
Reality Labs has lost tens of billions of dollars with little revenue so far, and management has not pulled back.
Reality Labs has accumulated over $60B in losses and remains unproven at scale as a business. Regulatory pressure on social platforms is increasing globally, with focus on teen safety, data privacy, and market power.
Much of the debate is how much future AI and advertising growth today's price already assumes, and how the market treats the ongoing Reality Labs losses. Weigh valuation using the company's own filings rather than a third-party estimate.
