Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) tracks the prices of goods and services bought by US households, published monthly by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. It uses a broader basket than CPI and adjusts for how people shift their spending when prices change. The Fed targets 2 percent inflation using core PCE.
Why investors watch it
- PCE is the gauge the Federal Reserve watches most closely when judging its 2 percent target.
- Because it adjusts for changing spending habits, it often reads slightly lower than CPI.
- A clear move in core PCE can firm up expectations for the Fed's next decision.
How PCE affects stocks, bonds, crypto, and gold
Since the Fed anchors policy to PCE, a surprise here can reset expectations for interest rates across the curve. Higher PCE can lift yields and pressure growth stocks, gold, and crypto. Softer PCE can ease financial conditions and support risk assets. It is closely tied to inflation expectations and the path of the 10Y Treasury yield.
What to watch in the next release
- Focus on core PCE, the Fed's preferred reading.
- Compare the monthly and annual rates against the 2 percent target.
- It is released later in the month than CPI, so it often confirms or challenges the CPI signal.
